Sailing Bodrum

Turkey is often overlooked as a travel destination but that is completely without reason as Turkey has vast amounts of not-so hidden jewels. Bodrum is one of the most famous destinations within Turkey’s borders.  Rich history, beautiful scenery and unmatched nightlife are all qualities that describe this vacation spot.

When talking about Turkey in general, its rich history is always mentioned and Bodrum is not different in any way. History lovers will surely have their breath taken away by the amount of history within this picturesque peninsula.  The history of Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus or Halicarnassos, goes back to the 13th century BC. The Mausoleum there is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during an earthquake which occurred sometime during the middle ages. Remnants of it, however, can still be seen in London’s British Museum.  The castle of St. Peter , also known as the Bodrum Castle, is the most prominent landmark of the city. Today, the castle operates as a museum, mainly focusing on underwater archaeology. Offering spectacular views, Bodrum Castle is also one of the world’s best preserved monuments from the medieval ages.

Another site worth visiting is definitely the Bodrum Amphitheatre. It dates back to the reign of King Mausolu, despite the fact that construction wasn’t complete until the Roman era. This Amphitheatre is located on the road to Gumbet.

One can go through the whole of Turkey and not see a place just like Bodrum. While in Bodrum, you are located, only a few minutes separate you from the busy urban surroundings to traditional Turkish settings where one can experience the true beauty of Turkish culture. Such places of tradition involve the towns of Gümbet, Bitez and Ortakent & Yahsi. These are all perfect to consider as one day field trips.

A wide array of activities can be done while visiting Bodrum. This is the perfect location to have a go at windsurfing. In the town of nearby Vass, you will find a large amount of stands, all renting out boards and sails. Competitions are organized here, especially during the summer time, so it may be a bit crowded. If you are searching for a more tranquil setting, be sure to go to the Pure Windsurfing Centre – that bay is nice, quiet and safe.
